Storage and Processing
Wiltshire Grain was established in 1984 with 52 members and a 20,000t storage capacity. Today, the facility has a 70,000t capacity and 125 members, handling up to 70,000t of throughout the year.
There are five intakes with a potential of operating up to 500t/hr during peak periods. Storage is in 47 silos ranging in size from 420 to 2,500t. The store runs five continuous flow driers with a total 170t/hour capacity. Full cleaning and grading facilities are also available. These facilities permit prompt harvest movement - usually within one day - by either pre-arranged haulage, or with members' own transport.
All grain is fully analysed on intake and outtake in the store's TASCC approved laboratory. Laboratory equipment is continually checked as part of a testing 'ring'.
Grain temperatures are carefully monitored throughout storage and managed using ventilation systems.
Marketing
Wiltshire grain directors work closely with the stores marketing agent Openfield to maximise returns to members. The plant itself is conveniently located with good trunk road connections to Feed Mills in the South West, Millers and Dock facilities on the South Coast along with many other specialist users throughout the country. A wide choice of marketing pools give members the flexibility to choose the timing of sales and receipts. The store has developed a high level of expertise in storing malting barley and is recognised by important consumers for the quality of barley it provides them.
Membership
Wiltshire Grain is a cooperative owned and controlled by its members who elect a board of directors to run the store. The store is maintained to a very high standard and ambitious plans are in place to expand the store to meet the increasing local demand for storage space.
Membership Storage entitlement can be as low as 10t up to a member's total arable crop production. Storage space can be acquired by making a down payment with the flexibility to choose the repayment period for any outstanding balance.
