Union Grain
Storage and Processing
Built in the mid 1980s, Union Grain operates a 20,000t store, housing 17,000t of grain in six bulk bays and 3,000t in six additional silos. There are two Law Denis driers capable of drying grain at 60t/hour, and while there is no first stage processing undertaken on site, the store is a LIFE futures store - for up to 15,000t of tendered futures wheat.
All grain is fully analysed on intake. Moisture, nitrogen, protein and oil contents are measured using modern equipment regularly checked as part of a testing ‘ring’, in Union Grain’s well equipped laboratory. There is the potential, should member interest or numbers increase, for double the current storage capacity on site and this will bring even further economies of scale.
Membership
There is no minimum tonnage requirement for membership. The current 37 members have individual committed storage space ranging from 50t to 2,000t. The initial committed tonnage charge or investment in the facility is £40.00/t and there are annual charges for storage and drying charges of £7.70/t and £3.45/t - 15 to 17% moisture for wheat and 9-12% for rape, with incremental increases for wetter samples.
Members are responsible for delivery into store and all sales are on a collected basis. Harvest intake is flexible and can operate 24 hours a day. During peak periods, the store is capable of loading in or out well in excess of 1,000t a day. Sampling and analysis results are batched and sent out at the end of the main intake season - by mid-September.
