Kernow Grain

Storage and Processing

Kernow Grain was established on a green field site in 1998 and now has a 14,500t storage capacity with the potential, subject to demand, for cost-effective expansion to 20,000t.

Storage is all silo based with 16 bins ranging from 180–1700t for storing a wide variety of crops and quality specifications. The store runs two continuous flow driers each with a 21t/hour capacity. Full cleaning and grading facilities are also available, including a four-screen rotary drum grader.

All grain is fully analysed on intake. Moisture, nitrogen, protein and oil contents are measured using an Infratec analyser calibrated and continually checked as part of a testing ‘ring’.

Grain is then and held in ventilated silos before prior to drying and storage. Grading to meet a particular contract specification takes place prior to out-loading.

Grain temperatures are carefully monitored throughout storage and managed using ventilation systems.

Membership

All original store space was sold, but space is available from a register of existing members looking to sell their space. All new members are required to purchase one share in the Company and the minimum commitment is 29t - one load of grain.

Members are charged an annual service charge on each tonne of space which, in the case of cereals, includes any drying charges up to 18.0%. They also pay the average pool price of all haulage to the store. Members may, by special arrangement, deliver to the store on their own transport.

The store uses and arranges outside haulage and where possible grain is moved within 24-48 hours of notification.

All members are sent a form prior to harvest on which they indicate the tonnage and commodities that they wish to put into the store. At harvest, members telephone the store with details of the commodity and tonnage available. The store arranges the movement of the grain, the member completing a Members Release Note, which must travel with each load of grain to the store.

Members are sent a weekly report on all deliveries to the store. More frequent reports are available on request. Peak daily intake is approx 800t and is usually limited to a maximum of six different commodities. Where other stores are being utilised as an extension to Kernow these volumes can increase. Kernow Grain also offers contract services to non-members to optimise utilisation of the facilities.
