Honey Pot Store

Storage and Processing

First opened in 1980, storage at Honey Pot Store now has a capacity of 30,000t. All loads are sampled, weighed and analysed for all relevant quality criteria, in the store’s on-site laboratory.

The facility has two driers capable of drying grain at rates of 40t/hour and a peak daily intake capacity over the harvest period of 4,000t.

Grain can also be pre-cleaned and dressed at rates of 30t/hour as part of the first stage processing carried out at the store. Sophisticated temperature monitoring equipment ensures grain is maintained in good condition.

Future expansion plans include the opportunity of building a further 6,500t silo extension.

Membership

While Openfield now owns the store, most previous farmer members have tonnage in Honey Pot Store under new storage agreements. Rather than re-investing in new farm facilities growers within a 30 mile radius are invited to utilise the Honey Pot Store. Annual costs are extremely competitive as a result of total throughput.

All participating farmers confirm their commodity requirements in January and return their commitment forms early in the spring. This indication of commodity tonnage helps with forward marketing and store management.

At harvest, members telephone the store to inform the business of tonnage and commodity, movement is then undertaken immediately. All grain entering the store is pooled and stored based on quality and variety.

This allows the Openfield marketing team to deliver maximum marketing benefit by fully utilising the businesses storage options in partnership with the farmer members.

The store operates a range of pools or a direct pricing scheme, thereby providing plenty of options for farmer members. Advance payments – based on an estimated value for the crop - are made, with payments throughout the year. This ensures cash-flow is not an issue.
