Hampshire Grain
The Store opened in the summer of 1978, as a 20.000 Tonne store, processing a variety of grains from 30 local farms. Over the following years, the store developed into what is now a 58000 tonne capacity store, handling produce from 98 farmer members within a 30 mile radius of the store.
The grain is stored in 46 storage bins, from 450 tonnes to 3800 tonnes with 3 Flatstores providing an additional 12500 tonnes of storage.
Supporting infrastructure has developed as the site has grown. The site now consists of two machinery buildings, controlling between them, an intake capacity in excess of 3000 tonnes per day through three main intake pits, a further two pits allow intake direct to storage.
Facilities include three Kamas cleaners rated at 250 t/hr for pre-cleaning, or 100 t/hr when fine cleaning to our customer’s individual requirements. Drying is through two tower driers and two continual flow driers, giving a combined drying capacity of 180 t/hr at 5% moisture extraction. Also on site is a 10t/hr gravity table.
Once in store, sophisticated cooling and monitoring equipment, along with trained staff, ensures that the crop is cooled and monitored on a regular basis. All bins are ventilated, allowing rapid conditioning of the grain once in store. The company has a continual program of modernization and maintenance, and has planning permission for a further 3000 tonnes of space on the Micheldever site.
Membership
Membership is flexible, with no minimum holding, and no restriction on crops, providing the store has sufficient grain to form a pool. The capital cost of the investment, can be spread over a maximum of 10 years, via a number of flexible payment options tailored to the individual members needs.
The store operates on a cost only basis, with members enjoying very competitive drying and handling costs compared with our competitors, and comparative on farm installations.
The investment is a "fully tradable, off farm asset". Flexibility is further enhanced by the option of using up to 25% of their entitled space twice, via the Harvest Pool, renting additional storage or letting some space depending on the cropping in any particular year.
Hampshire Grain plans to move member’s grain from the farm within 24 hours of the member’s request. Some delays may occur within the height of the harvest, but these are kept to a minimum through efficient use of haulage, and the store operating on a 24/7 basis during the harvest period. Quick turn around times for the hauliers, means that the store has access to lorries at a time when they can be in short supply.
