Aberdeen Grain

Storage and Processing

The original facility - built in 1984 – has now expanded to a current capacity of 52,000t. This includes two flat stores (18,000t and 6,000t) and 15 separate silos with an individual capacity of up to 1,400t.

In July 2009 a new development was completed including a new traffic flow system, double weighbridge and office, 15,000t of new storage capacity, an additional 75t/hr drying capacity for malting barley, and 225t/hr feed grains. The new intakes are capable of taking an impressive 400t/hr into the new plant. The new dryers are powered by LPG, a gas installation designed for Aberdeen Grain by Calor to specifically cater for the large off take over a very short period of time. This is part of a four phase development which will take Aberdeen Grain's total capacity to 85,000t with further room for expansion in the future, as required.

All grain is fully analysed on intake and held in ventilated storage silos whilst awaiting drying. Moisture, nitrogen, hagberg, screenings, admixture and oil content are analysed on intake as standard and the laboratory takes part in a number of ‘ring check’ calibration schemes.

Grain is pre-cleaned prior to drying and storage and where necessary segregated and dressed. Grain moistures and temperatures are carefully monitored throughout the storage period and managed with an automatic ventilation system. The store can handle between 2,500-4,000t of wet grain per day (depending on moisture content) with the intake open 7 days a week throughout the harvest period. All grain is tested, dried and stored before the following day’s intake, avoiding any risk of heated grains, wastage and potential for moulds or infestation.

Membership

Members pay an annual service charge per tonne of grain delivered into the store with additional, highly competitive, drying charges applicable depending on moistures. Members can either deliver to the store themselves, arrange their own transport or Aberdeen Grain will arrange haulage on their behalf.

All Members are notified of harvest commodity requirements in December/January and return their commitment forms early in the spring. This indication of commodity tonnage helps with forward marketing and store management. At harvest, members telephone the store to inform the business of tonnage and commodity, movement is then undertaken immediately.

Members are sent a copy of all delivery tickets on a weekly basis with a summary report of all deliveries made to Aberdeen Grain sent after harvest immediately. Advance payments amounting to 80% of the estimated value of the grain are paid to members in October ensuring cash-flow is not an issue. This allows Aberdeen Grain to deliver maximum marketing benefit by fully utilising the businesses storage options. Since 2002 Aberdeen Grain has witnessed significant growth with not only all store space sold but having to build additional capacity to meet demand. This growth has also taken into account the changes in farming policy of retiring Members whose storage capacity has readily been reallocated.
